We are down to the last couple of weeks for tax season and lately I have been getting a ton of questions regarding the deadline for taxes and how to pay the government.
In Canada, the deadline to file and pay your personal taxes is April 30.
Since April 30 falls on a Saturday this year that means you have until the next business day to file which means this year you have until May 2nd, 2016. I am still telling all my clients April 30 - no need to drag it out any farther.
There is an exception for tax payers who carried on a business (sole Proprietor) in 2015. In this case you have until June 15 to file your return without penalty. However, the taxes are still due April 30.
How to Pay Canada Revenue Agency
Canada Revenue Agency has made it easy to pay them. You have a couple of options to pay your taxes.
Getting a Refund?
If you are receiving a refund the easiest way to get your money is to ensure you have your direct deposit information set up with Canada Revenue Agency. This can be done right on your personal tax return, online, by phone or mail. If you had direct deposit last year, and nothing has changed, then there is no need to fill it out again.
Don't put filing your taxes off any longer as you don't want to pay extra in penalties and interest. Plus, if you're getting a refund, get your return done early so that you can receive that money and put it to good use.
